I enjoyed every minute of this one. Lillian/Lily and the Mad Duke/Devon were both interesting people and there were quite a few funny moments in the story. There was also some heated intimate times as well. The Mad Duke really isn't mad, he just refuses to be forced into society's demands and they don't like it one bit. He couldn't care less about their opinions. Some of his "pranks" are part of his getting even with what he sees as the useless people of that society. His reasons are even deeper than that although he didn't realize all of that at first.
I liked how he interacted with his mother and sister. His mother was always upsetting his household when she visited but he loved her just the same. His sister is someone who he often has teasing banter with.
Lillian is caught between a rock and a hard place. She has sacrificed so much of her life to her family and now she's being "sold" to anyone who can benefit her brothers. Especially her brother Solomon sees her as a bargaining chip to benefit his business. Otherwise he could care less for her.
I liked how in the final outcome, the "evil" ones get what they deserve but definitely NOT what they want. It made for some surprising twists.

The first book in her “Tricks of the Ton” series, Ms. Michels takes you back in time, where men were free to live as they wished, women had no value other than what they could bring to a merger by marriage and the wagging tongues of London’s elite ruled. This is the story of one woman, who has sacrificed all she has for the men of her life. First to her beloved father to whom she played nursemaid as her youth slipped away, next to her brothers who saw her as a commodity for the best advantageous marriage and finally to the man who would steal her heart as easily as she had stolen from him, The Mad Duke of Thornwood.
Lily, as she is known to Devon, the Duke of Thornwood, has stolen more than a pocket watch after their only night of passion. His revenge comes a year later when he is introduced to Lady Lillian Phillips while he accompanies his friend Steelings to the Dillsworth ball. To keep her secret, Lily must submit to Devon’s terms of black mail. What begins as an act of revenge quickly turns to a game of seduction, though both parties in in denial.
As Devon evokes his revenge on the ton for the years of scandal thrust upon his family, he enlists the aid of Lily as his partner in crime. Lily is unwilling and yet his revenge is her reward as one by one the suitors her brothers have chosen are driven away. But one will not be foiled and our lovers must not only draw upon their inner strength but learn to lean on both family and friends if they are to succeed.
What I loved best about this story is that while Devon is definitely delicious and the epitome of any hero, Lily is no helpless beauty. I also applaud Ms. Michels handling of Lily’s brother Nathaniel, his secret and his determination to come to his sister’s aid even though his father cast him out from the family fold ten years prior. This story has humor, love, mischief, deception, meddling mothers, and loyal friends, bar room brawls, glittering society, and definitely sexual tension. I look forward to the rest of this series as we follow the other characters introduced in this book.
This series is amazing as it takes place simultaneously! The story of the Mad Duke of Thornwood and Lady Lily was frought the with tension and fun. She is a strong woman trying to perserve herself from the evil brothers trying to sell her off and save her family heirlooms. The Mad Duke doesn't care about propriety or society. This was such a fun read with witty dialogue, intrigue and a beautiful journey of love. The story was fast paced leaving you tense with "What will happen next?" Well written with great scenes. You will be immensely entertained.
I thought this was a very entertaining novel. It was not exactly what I expected from the blurb - but very good nonetheless
I liked Lily and Devon immensely - some of the things Devon said were hysterical. Lily did annoy me a time or two. I found her to be a little hypocritical - she stole from Devon and disappeared - but she got upset with him for not being honest with her?!?
I was also a bit annoyed with the incorrect form of proper title address to some characters - Devon's sister would have been introduced as Lady Roselyn not Miss Grey - she has the title as the daughter of a duke. Also Lily is addressed as my lady more than once but is introduced as Miss Phillips. Since I don't know what title her father held ( he and her brother are referred to as Lord Bixley which could be anything from baron to marquis) so I don't know which address is incorrect. This kind of mistake irks me - I am not a stickler for historical accuracy - but this is basic knowledge - and that it slipped past both the author and editor is upsetting. But it is her first book - mistakes are bound to happen.
Other than that one little thing - it is very well written for a first book and the story flows nicely. The author introduces us to characters that will be in future books - but we are never in doubt as to who the hero and heroine are in this book!
Bottom line - I did enjoy the book and am looking forward to the next one.
